Fatal Crash Update: Brookfield Resident ID'd As Victim Of Newtown Collision

A Fairfield County man has been identified as the victim of a two-vehicle crash that killed one and injured two.

The collision took place in Newtown around 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 20 in the area of Berkshire Road and Nighthawk Lane.

According to Newtown Police Lt. John Smith, John Schmalbach, age 75, of Brookfield, was transported to Danbury Hospital for injuries and was later pronounced deceased. 

The occupants of the other involved vehicle were also transported to Danbury Hospital for injuries and were in stable condition, Smith said.

Smith said the investigation determined Schmalbach was traveling eastbound in a 1983 Ford pickup truck and crossed the center double yellow line in the area of the Sandy Hook Fire Department substation, where the truck struck a westbound 2023 Toyota Rav4.

Sandy Hook Fire Department, Newtown Ambulance, and a medic from Danbury Fire Department responded to the scene.
